Cholesterol and brain function

Cholesterol is a fat like substance that is found in our blood. Cholesterol is essential for the body functions. It gives energy to the building blocks of our body known as cells. It also plays a significant role in the production of many hormones like testosterone and estrogen.  Cholesterol is naturally made by our body. 80 percent of the cholesterol is produced by the liver and the remaining 20 percent comes from the diet we eat. A cholesterol rich diet includes dairy products, eggs, and meats.

Cholesterol should be present in a moderate level in the body. Otherwise it can cause serious conditions to some of the vital organs of our body. Cholesterol is either high density lipoprotein or low density lipoprotein.  High density lipoprotein is good for our body and low density lipoprotein is bad for our body. Like many benefits cholesterol is an important part of myelin sheath. Myelin sheath is a neuron that is constituted by the fat containing cells. Myelin sheath plays an important role in insulating the axon from electrical activities that can hamper memory. It is essential to route electrical impulses properly for proper functioning of the brain.
