High cholesterol and grapefruit |
Grapefruit consumption has significant positive impact upon cholesterol level of our body. It helps in reducing low density lipoprotein or LDL content. Grapefruits belong to the family of citrus foods and studies suggest that one grapefruit a day can help in avoiding heart disease and high cholesterol risks significantly. Both red and white grapefruits are effective in this regard. However, antioxidant content in red grapefruit is higher than its white counterpart. Along with, red grapefruit contains several other unknown chemicals that help in reducing the content of cholesterol and triglycerides. Bioflavonoids are highly helpful in reducing the cholesterol level. Grapefruits are one of the rich sources of bioflavonoid. Along with, regular consumption of grapefruits will also give you relief from gum diseases, depression and stomach ulcer. However, grapefruits alone cannot curb the increased cholesterol content. It needs to be complemented with healthy lifestyle, balanced diet and regular exercising. Recently The Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC) has found that grapefruits exhibit negative drug-food interaction towards some cholesterol lowering drugs. However, all cholesterol lowering drugs do not exhibit this negative interaction. Hence, you need to consult your doctor before starting consuming grapefruits in combination with cholesterol drugs. It will lower down risks of negative side effects and interactions. |
