High cholesterol and nuts

Nuts having higher amount of unsaturated fat are highly beneficial for people struggling with higher cholesterol level. Nuts like almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and pecans fall in this category. Even pistachios and walnuts provide higher amount of unsaturated fat. Effectiveness of a nut for people with high cholesterol depends upon its unsaturated fat content. Higher level of unsaturated fat is capable of reducing the level of bad cholesterol or LDL. As a result, total cholesterol level of our body becomes balanced. Recently, cultivation of high-oleic peanuts has started in some parts of the globe. These peanuts have higher unsaturated fat content compared to normal peanuts. FDA has approved these peanuts for people struggling with high cholesterol content. There are several nuts which comprise both saturated and unsaturated fat in higher amount. Macadamia and Brazil nuts fall in this category. These nuts need to be avoided even if they have higher unsaturated fat content. Their higher saturated fat content makes them unhealthy for heart. Along with, containing higher amount of unsaturated fat is not enough. The nut should be rich in phytosterols, several vitamins, required minerals and fiber. It will help in better management of cholesterol level and prevent several health hazards including those related to heart.
