Fasting For Cholesterol Test |
Before going for cholesterol test it is necessary to fast. Fast is important for blood test because if the content of the blood changes due to intake of food then the test result will not be proper. Breakdown of food can increase cholesterol level in the blood due to which the exact amount of cholesterol cannot be measured and the entire test will fail. If in the test it is shown that lipid level are high then there is risk of heart disease. You can drink water before going for test but food must be avoided. Before the test doctor will always ask the patient to fast at least for a time of 9 hours to 12 hours before the test is going to start. This will give the best result for cholesterol test. The doctor can find the exact level of LDL which is bad cholesterol in the body. This cholesterol gets affected with the consumption of food. Even several types of medicines which can affect test result must be avoided. If fasting is not performed before the test doctor can ask the patient to go for test again. HDL reading will be accurate but most important reading of LDL must be accurate and for that fast is must. Recent studies have shown that there is no need for patient to fast before going for the test. |
