High Cholesterol: can it be prevented?

Well, any health complication can be prevented if proper preventative measures are taken on time. In fact, it is also possible to prevent high cholesterol by taking some of the necessary steps as you age. Cholesterol is more specific to age, although it might happen to people in their late 20s as well. However, if it has not happened to you yet, you can take these measures to prevent the condition:

  1. As you age, make sure to check your cholesterol numbers every year when you are in your 30s. As you cross 40, make it a point to know the numbers at least once in 6 months.
  2. Cholesterol levels rise because of the fatty foods we eat; you must know what foods you should not eat. Cholesterol levels tend to escalate with the intake of foods that are rich in saturated fats. Foods that contain Trans fats and hydrogenated oils are the worst. Margarine, cookies, and potato chips are also very bad for your health.
  3. Eat healthy vegetable fats, such as olive oil, safflower oil and avocado oil.
  4. Eat fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts as much as you can. You can eat healthy omega 3 fats as well; beans, oatmeal and legumes are also good for preventing cholesterol.
  5. Be active. Exercise, aerobics and yoga can keep your heart healthy.
Reduce stress from your life, take each day as it comes and accept the truth of life.
