Statins for high cholesterol are effective medications. And they are not merely useful in controlling high cholesterol, but it also help in reducing the other health ailments like stroke, heart attack, cataract and cancer. But again, it is worth noting that statins have some side effects. The most common side effects of statins are muscle ache. And the ache mainly occurs at the time when statins are started.
In case, if the muscle ache is mild then many people tend to ignore it. But when the pain is severe and unbearable then some action must be taken. This is because such severe muscle pains tend to interfere with normal and daily activities. In some people muscle ache may even occur after long periods of statins.
Mostly, muscle ache due to statins do not indicate any major problem. But in very rare cases, it may indicate rhabdomyolysis. This is a serious health condition in which there may be breakdown or permanent damage to muscles and also this condition may affect kidney and liver. This problem mainly occurs when the dosage of statin is too high. It may even occur due to drug interactions between high dosages of statins and other medications.
