Normal range for cholesterol

Body essentially needs cholesterol to perform several functions. However, too much of cholesterol leads to unhealthy results, particularly, coronary disorders. A regular blood test is enough to reveal the cholesterol level in the blood. The value below 200 mg/dl is considered normal and most touted for heart patients. The cholesterol level between the range of 200 and 239 mg/dl is considered to hit the borderline. However, this level can be termed normal for people above the age of 40 years. However, if the person records the level of 240 mg/dl or more, the person is believed to have high cholesterol. Such a person should be immediately given the treatment with medicines to bring this level under control. Such a high person, if not given the right treatment at time, is considered at a high risk for disorders like heart strokes, attacks, clotting.

Apart from medicines, this value can be checked by following certain diet alterations. Such patients are encouraged to adopt strict aberrations from high calorie food containing saturated fats. Frequent check-ups to keep a track on the cholesterol are also essential. This allows the specialist to confirm if the given treatment is working well with the patient or not.
