Plant sterols and statins

In one of the recent studies published in the American Journal of cardiology reveals that when statins are used in combination with sterol-ester margarine, there is a positive effect on cholesterol levels. This therapy brought about control in bad cholesterol in the blood. Thus, post this study; many doctors feel that rather than prescribing higher doses of statins, it would be apt to use cholesterol lowering spreads having plant sterols along with normal dosage of statin medications. 
To elaborate the study, it was seen that when the combination therapy of statin and sterol-ester margarine was used the effect on lowering bad cholesterol was similar to almost doubling the dosage of statins. However, in this study there was no such effect see on HDL or good cholesterol. 
But due to the effect of plants sterols on bad cholesterol, this finding is a boon for the doctors who constantly search for the remedies or alternatives that can be effectively used along with statins without increasing the dosage of statins for controlling high cholesterol.
