Can treatment used for reducing cholesterol levels be risky?

The primary treatment for high cholesterol is administered through a series of medications. The drugs used for alleviating the excessive deposits of cholesterol are referred by the term statin. This class of drugs essentially works by blocking the agent known to formulate cholesterol inside the body system. The regular consumption of these drugs under the supervision of a specialist helps the body to re-absorb the cholesterol accumulated around the arterial walls. This essentially reverses the dangers of heart attacks, blockages in the blood vessels and other coronary disorders.

However, like other medicines, these cholesterol relieving medications also have their own share of side effects. The common and tolerable after-effects include nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. However, the wrong dosage or prolonged consumption of these drugs may cause permanent damages in the liver. Unfortunately, liver disorders take place without any significant symptoms or signs, therefore, most of the times people remain unaware of such malfunctions. In addition, these drugs are also associated with severe muscle problems. As per the experts, higher dosage of statins accelerates the breakdown of the muscle cells and release of the protein called myoglobin. The excessive production of this protein further increases the danger of kidney damages.
