Cholesterol: what is the role of statin?

Statin drugs are class of medications used to lower your cholesterol level. Statin medicines are well-known for its effectiveness in lowering the elevated LDL or bad cholesterol. There are various types of statin drugs are available.
Usually statin drugs work by stopping an essential enzyme in the liver which is needed to produce cholesterol. The enzyme is named as hydroxy-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase or HMG-CoA reductase. Statin drugs contains HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors to block the enzyme. When a lesser amount of cholesterol is developed, the liver employs more of it and results in a lower level of cholesterol.
Statin drugs may also assist your body to reabsorb the cholesterol which has built in plaques on the walls of your artery and also prevents your blood vessels from further obstruction.
Some studies have proved that statin drugs can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people having multiple risk factors of high cholesterol such as high blood pressure, low good cholesterol, family history, age, diabetes, alcohol and smoking. Statin drugs are mostly used by people who can’t able to lower the bad cholesterol through healthy diet and regular exercise.

Statin drugs are mostly well endured and the side effects of this drug are typically mild and temporary.
